A few quick updates for you all everybody. On June 27, the marvelous, wonderful, powerfully commanding Del Sol String Quartet put on a virtual concert premiering a whole bunch of quartets by me and my fellow Cycle 12 GLFCAM fellows. As we are all well aware, all live performances have been either cancelled or postponed, but Del Sol was well-organized to put together this concert via Zoom using pre-recorded videos of each premiere. The live chat was wild and the concert was a good time all around. I’m a big fan of these new mediums and formats of presenting new music to a wide audience. My piece, A Song About Unity, closed out the program of what turned out to be a collection of very diverse pieces. Documentation of the performance is coming soon along with the availability of the score.
Last Thursday, July 2nd, a piece I wrote and donated to the #GLFCAMGigThruCOVID project was also premiered digitally. feeling less and less was written for guitarist, David Gonzales, and cellist, Natalie Raney, in San Francisco. I’m very glad I got to work with them. They were so kind and thoughtful during a time when performers around the country were scrambling to figure out what the hell they were going to do. Really hope I get to work with them again in the future! Link to the video is below.
Last thing for now is the premiere of ANOTHER new piece I was able to squeeze out of my tiny brain this year. Commissioned by the Ad Astra Music Festival, my new work for voice and ensemble, Scattered Inheritance, is being premiered virtually on Saturday, July 18. I think I will be writing a separate post about the process of creating this piece, so I won’t talk about it too much yet. I will say, however, that I get to work with the ever-inspiring Xuan for this project. I worked with her recently for the premiere of Empty parking lot, ringing, and was just blown away by her creativity and abilities. Rehearsals for Scattered Inheritance start this week and I am anxious to hear it come together. Please make some time to watch the premiere if you can! Details for the livestream will be updated in this Facebook event once they are available.
I plan on updating this space with some new writings about pieces I’ve been working on and more news that I haven’t mentioned yet. Keep an eye out and stay in touch!
